Creating a Clearer Apprenticeship Journey
An apprenticeship involves a number of different stages, requirements and milestones. We know that the clearer these are from the beginning, the easier it is for apprentices and employers to plan effectively and stay focused on progress.
Feedback from our learners has told us that greater consistency and clarity can make a real difference.
You said:
Learners told us that it would be easier to plan their apprenticeship learning if workshops and seminars were held at more consistent times.
They also told us that they wanted a clearer understanding of the full apprenticeship journey, including their portfolio, Gateway and End-Point Assessment.
We listened:
We have reviewed our programme scheduling so that, wherever possible, learners remain on the same day and time each week for workshops and seminars.
Greater consistency should make it easier for both learners and employers to plan protected apprenticeship learning time around workplace commitments.
We are also strengthening how we explain the apprenticeship journey from the beginning of each programme.
Rather than leaving conversations about Gateway and final assessment until the later stages of an apprenticeship, assessment readiness will increasingly form part of regular progress discussions.
Employers will also receive clearer information about the role they play at different stages of the apprenticeship and can use Aptem to view their apprentice’s learning plan and progress.
Building learning in the right order
Our curriculum team is also continuously reviewing the sequencing and structure of programmes.
The aim is to make sure learning always takes place at the right time and in the right order, with workshops, seminars, assessments and revision activities building logically on previous learning.
A well-structured curriculum should help apprentices understand not only what they are learning, but why they are learning it and how it contributes towards workplace competence and final assessment.
Making systems and resources easier to use
We also recognise that apprenticeship systems and requirements can sometimes feel complicated.
Aptem remains our central platform for apprenticeship learning and progress, and we are continuing to review guidance so that expectations are easier to understand.
Alongside this, we are developing our Resource Centre to make it easier for learners and colleagues to find current guidance, resources and support materials in one place.
These changes are all part of the same objective: creating a clearer and more connected apprenticeship experience from the first day of learning through to successful completion.
