What are Functional Skills?
Functional Skills are practical skills in English and Maths that enable individuals to operate confidently, effectively, and independently in life and work.
They are essential for:
- Education: Providing a foundation for further learning and development across various subjects.
- Employment: Enabling individuals to handle calculations, communication, and problem-solving in real-world job scenarios.
- Personal Development: Helping individuals manage everyday tasks with confidence, such as budgeting, reading instructions, and using technology effectively.
Why are Functional Skills required?
Functional Skills are a key component of apprenticeships, ensuring apprentices are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in their chosen career path. They are recognised by employers across the UK and are often prerequisites for:
- Job Roles: Many employers look for these skills as they indicate a readiness for work and the ability to perform various tasks.
- Apprenticeship Standards:
– Functional Skills are qualifications for those that have not achieved a GCSE grade C(4) in English and/or maths
– Mandatory for those aged 16 to 18
– Optional for those aged 19 and above - Progression Opportunities: Possessing Functional Skills can lead to further education opportunities, promotions, and career advancements.

Important notes for Apprentices
Functional Skills Training
- During Working Hours: Functional Skills training is conducted during your working hours, ensuring it integrates seamlessly with your apprenticeship.
- Exclusion from Off-the-Job Training: While the training takes place during working hours, it cannot be included in the off-the-job training hours required for apprenticeships. However, it remains essential for the completion of your apprenticeship standard.
